What is GIS (Geographic Information System)?

A geographic information system (GIS) integrates hardware, software, and data for capturing, managing, analyzing, and displaying all forms of geographically referenced information. GIS allows us to view, understand, question, interpret, and visualize data in many ways that reveal relationships, patterns, and trends in the form of maps, globes, reports, and charts.  A GIS helps you answer questions and solve problems by looking at your data in a way that is quickly understood and easily shared.

Another to think about GIS is an interactive map on your computer.  A good example of this is Mapquest.  More than likely, you have used this web mapping tool to find driving routes, locations of businesses, and find address of friends and family.  Other common internet mapping sites include Live Maps from MSN, Google maps, and Yahoo! maps.  There are also sites that allow you to look at the world in 3D.  Google created Google Earth, while NASA has World Wind.  If you want to see an interactive map of the County, just click on the LinCoGeoMoose button at the top of the screen or click here.

If you want to learn more about GIS, you can go the ESRI website "What is GIS?".
