Where is Geographic Information Services Office?

The GIS office is run out of the Lincoln County Environmental Department in the Highway Building located on the north side of Highway 19 on the west side of Ivanhoe, Minnesota.

Our Mission Statement:

To supply a complete spatial dataset of the county which provides the citizens and governments of Lincoln County with accurate and reliable information to support community decision making.

Goals:

Provide geographic and related information in an efficient and timely manner
Maintain a fundamental geographic dataset for use by community GIS
Continue to explore GIS and technical advancements to the betterment of the County GIS program

What is GIS (Geographic Information System)?

A geographic information system (GIS) integrates hardware, software, and data for capturing, managing, analyzing, and displaying all forms of geographically referenced information. GIS allows us to view, understand, question, interpret, and visualize data in many ways that reveal relationships, patterns, and trends in the form of maps, globes, reports, and charts. A GIS helps you answer questions and solve problems by looking at your data in a way that is quickly understood and easily shared.

Another to think about GIS is an interactive map on your computer. A good example of this is Mapquest. More than likely, you have used this web mapping tool to find driving routes, locations of businesses, and find address of friends and family. Other common internet mapping sites include Live Maps from MSN, Google maps, and Yahoo! maps. There are also sites that allow you to look at the world in 3D.
