How about money? Take a look at a penny. You may find a "D" underneath the year on the front of the penny. That "D" says that the penny was made in Denver, Colorado. Geography is the study of WHERE. There is so much information that is linked to WHERE. Like with the penny, there is the story of WHERE an objects came from. There is also the story of where something is going...think about your mail. The address you put on the front tells the US Post Office WHERE to send it. There are many ways to learn more about how geography matters to you. Check out these resources and see the world in a whole new way.
Every year, the National Geographic Society celebrates Geography Awareness Week. This year, Geography Awareness Week is November 16-20, 2009. The week is spent focusing on how geography is a part of every facet of our daily lives. To learn more, check out the Geography Awareness Week website. As a part of Geography Awareness Week, ESRI celebrates one aspect of geography...GIS. GIS Day is held each year during Geography Awareness Week. This year, GIS Day is November 18, 2009. To learn more, check out the GIS Day website.
For Teachers: You know how important Geography is, especially now that our world is growing smaller with the internet. We at the County would like to help you in your quest to encourage your students interest in their world. To this end, we have provided a number of resources to help you in educating your students about the many realms of geography. If you would like to participate in Lincoln County's GIS Day activities, please contact Emma.
